BlackBerry BBX

Research In Motion announced BBX, a new multi-device mobile platform for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets:

BBX is the next generation platform for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets. It combines the best of BlackBerry and the best of QNX and is designed from the ground up to enable the powerful real-time mobile experiences that distinguish BlackBerry products and services.

The BBX platform will include BBX-OS, and will support BlackBerry cloud services and development environments for both HTML5 and native developers. BBX will also support applications developed using any of the tools available today for the BlackBerry PlayBook – including Native SDK, Adobe AIR/Flash and WebWorks/HTML5, as well as the BlackBerry Runtime for Android Apps – on future BBX-based tablets and smartphones.

My Comments
1. With the acquisition of the QNX platform, and the desired tight integration between the BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook, it’s appropriate to bring both together. Actually, it’s more than that – it’s strategically right to do so.

2. There’s a bevy of new features coming. Support for Android Apps via a runtime is a subtle move to embrace the innovation happening in the Android world, and to include those apps in the overall app count covering both BlackBerry and Android. BlackBerry is trailing both iPhone/iPad and Android devices, so leveraging the greater strength of one of those is a good move.

3. I’m a long time BlackBerry user. I like the devices. I like the real keyboard. I look forward to seeing the realization of this vision in future devices.
