Enterprise Collaboration and Virtual Teams Report (December 11, 2007)

The Technology Trends of Enterprise Collaboration and Virtual Teams

  • SharePoint SP1 … Microsoft released SP1 for WSS v3 and SharePoint 2007. “Service Pack 1 includes support for Windows Server 2008 and Internet Information Services (IIS) 7, support for creating Web Parts by using AJAX, and new operations and properties for the Stsadm command line tool. Service Pack 1 also includes over 60 hotfixes across all areas of SharePoint Products and Technologies.SharePoint Team Blog, Michael Gannotti
  • Cisco Telerpresence … Current change underway with telepresence at Cisco: more openness for connecting telepresence suites across customers. “That’s changing with Cisco’s opening of telepresence technology to enable intra-network connections. This means Cisco telepresence users can communicate with their partners, suppliers and customers around the world—any time, any place—with the same efficiencies and experience as if they were physically there regardless of the host network.Baseline Magazine. After a year of use, some of the early adopters report that they are finding the technology helpful.
  • Video of the SharePoint Connector for Atlassian … Jonathan from Atlassian talks through and demonstrates the integration it offers between Confluence, its wiki, and Microsoft SharePoint. Atlassian
  • FolderShare Bug Resolved … Windows Live FolderShare had a bug, that resulted in user files being deleted without the user requesting the same. It is now fixed. “Microsoft sent an email to users on Friday alerting them that it has fixed a bug that may have “accidentally moved” user files from their original folders into the FolderShare Trash folder, and that users should not delete files in Trash until they ensure they were meant to be deleted. It also advised users how to retrieve deleted files from the Trash folder.ComputerWorld NZ
  • Live Workspace Beta … Microsoft released Live Workspace into beta. “Microsoft approaches the document collaboration project from the opposite side of Zoho and Google, adding choices in installed office applications for saving documents to the Web, rather than starting on the Web and letting you move the document to a local hard drive. Though it doesn’t let you edit documents from a Web-based interface, as the Google and Zoho alternatives do, Live Workspace lets users save Office documents directly to the Web from the installed Microsoft Office apps—Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. It also gives them the ability to preview the document online.PCMagazine, David Berlind, InfoWorld (“it misses the mark”)
  • TimeBridge Out of Beta … TimeBridge released Version 1 of its calendar brokering service, ending the beta programme. TimeBridge

Insights on Being Productive and Effective as an Individual

  • On Reputation … David reminds us of the importance of a good reputation: “Consistency, dependability and regularity work: occasional peaks of excellence don’t. For example, always meet your deadlines. If you are asked to do something, make sure you know exactly what it is and when it is due.David Maister
  • Focus on Actions … Be ruthless about focusing on actions, and you will get more done. Eg, “When sitting in a meeting, don’t just jot down random notes about what was said (or more likely, doodle cartoons until the meeting ends). Instead, focus on what actions need to be taken. When an action is mentioned, write it down — especially if it’s an action you need to take. Mark it with a star, so you can easily transfer your action notes to your to-do list or calendar immediately after the meeting (and make that a habit too). This way, the meeting wasn’t a waste of time — you’ve got actions to take as a result of it. If people are talking a lot about an issue, but no actions come out of the discussion, make a point to ask: “So what action are we going to take on this? Who is going to do the action and by when?” You may encounter a lot more discussion with no actions, but be persistent. Without action, you just have a lot of hot air.FreelanceSwitch
