New Year's Resolution Update: So Far So Good, Feb 8

Just back from my 3500m run today.

One of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2007 was to cultivate increased energy and vitality to handle the multiple demands placed on my time and life. Here are the strategies I’ve been following, and the results I’ve achieved to date:

  • More Sleep … For over a decade I’ve fueled daily performance with 6-6.5 hours sleep a night plus coffee. I was finding myself on a downward spiral of more-and-more coffee to keep going, combined with increased grumpiness with my wife and family. Not good. So … I’m sleeping more … 7.5-8 hours a night whenever possible, plus a cut of 50% of my daily coffee intake.
  • More Awareness About Food … Although I have a large build, according to the charts I weighed too much. So I’ve been eating more carefully (smaller portions) and differently (particularly more protein). I’ve lost 5.3kg in 3.5 weeks. I’ve still got at least that still to come off.
  • Running … I’ve never been a runner, but greatly inspired by the likes of Jason, Mike, Julian, Russell and others, I’ve started. I’ve got the gear … skin shorts, running top, pedometer, heart-rate monitor, headlamp for night running, X-Socks and more. As following the lead from Mike, I even purchased and devoured Dean’s Ultramarathon Man book. I’ve built up slowly, as per the directions from Runners World and others, and today I did 3500m in 18m39s … beating my time from two days ago on that distance by 24s. And I’m wondering whether I have the time to train for the marathon here in November …
  • Focus on Being Present and Happy … Happiness is a choice, and I am so aware that I’m response-able to choose happiness in the moments of my life. Whenever I feel demoralized or grumpy, I’m trying to remember 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NIV) … Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. As I walked my son up-and-down for an hour in the early hours of this morning, that was what I kept on saying …

So far so good. A little bit at a time constantly applied equally positive change. That’s so true in so many areas of life …
