Google introduced a new version of its online spreadsheet, called (new) Sheets. The new version is faster, supports many more cells and columns, and works offline. You need to switch to the new version to get it, since it has been rebuilt from the ground up.
A couple of comments:
1. Asking users to switch to new Sheets is a departure from the usual approach with most Google and other cloud-based services, where you get the new stuff whether you want it or not. Requiring a definite switch will reduce the adoption rate in the short term, but perhaps that is the point. We will have to wait and see if Google changes it to be the default in the months to come.
2. The Filter Views capability will be powerful and useful. You have the ability to create and save a particular view of your data which you can work with independently of what other people see and work with when sharing the spreadsheet with them. Previously we would have created a copy of the data, done some wizardry with it, and then had to pay the cost with data that became out-of-date (rapidly or otherwise). Filter Views solves the problem, allowing people with different informational and analytical needs to view what they need to see without impacting others.
