Matt Moore (of Engineers without Fears fame) is talking about Enterprise 2.0. Matt is wanting to drill below the hype of 2.0, and look at what’s worked and what hasn’t. This is based on some case studies.

Early Views of Enterprise 2.0
– Andrew McAfee, the SLATES model. All about the deployment of Web 2.0 tools in the Enterprise. See Andrew McAfee.
– Dion Hinchcliffe, the FLATNESSES model. Adds more things in.
– the AIIM report on technology components in an Enterprise 2.0 platform. See Figures 2 and 3 in the free report, as well as Figure 22 (what are you currently doing?)
– Forrester Research 2008, on Enterprise Web 2.0. One finding is that large organizations prefer the purchase of suites from vendors, rather than point solutions.
Some other thoughts …
– Wikis are pretty “boring” (a good thing), because we know lots about how to use them effectively. Eg, see Wikipatterns
– WorkLight offers a plug-in for FaceBook — called WorkBook — that enables business teams to do their work within FaceBook.
– “blogs are so 2005.” The big issue with blogs is how they relate to their work. Do they help with getting work done, or is it something additional? Organizations where blogs work well are organizations where people publish a lot.
– search … we have been at search for so long, that it should be really boring, but for many organizations, it’s not good enough. Matt suggests that we need to stop thinking about search, and start thinking about findability.
– RSS … hat tip to James Dellow for the recent Enterprise 2.0 Action Day. There are some good case studies of firms using RSS to improve business processes, eg, Union Bank of California, and Wallen Enterprises.
– social bookmarking … for enterprise companies. Some companies using are MITRE, Honeywell and Bupa. Mentioned Connectbeam (“lots of good work”) and IBM Lotus Connections (“they couldn’t give me any customer references”)
– mashups … huge opportunity here … for organizations to liberate their data.
Where’s All Of This Going?
– Google Docs & Spreadsheets … some big firms looking at shifting from Microsoft Office to this. Much better alignment with work practice. It’s not ready yet to do this, but in 18 months time it will be much better.
– The shift of applications from the desktop onto the web, eg, MindMeister for online mindmapping.
– Micro-blogging for keeping other people up-to-date on what’s going on.
– Mobile devices, especially the iPhone. Matt said, “I knew the iPhone would be huge when my girlfriend’s mother said she wanted one.”
– Second Life … “it’s not the future, but it’s worth going into.”
Final thought … All of these things will come together.
