Interactions 2012 – Inside the Social Business – Lee Bryant

Lee Bryant from Dachis Group is talking about social business.

Key points:
– (1) Poor user experience leads to low adoption. (2) Most intranets are not fundamentally productive tools.
– Better approach – ambient actions that throw off knowledge in the flow of work.
– Adoption – changing habits is very hard, what's the incentive to using the intranet?
– … digital natives expert real-time flow, not just docs.
– … consumerization of IT is changing expectations.
– … the systems we use at work don't work. They're slow, give a bad experience, etc.
– … need to look at the value proposition of having our own intranet.
– … need to be social on the inside, not just the outside.
– key capabilities of new social platforms – profiles, social network, microblogging, activity streams, collaboration and discussion spaces, idea crowdsourcing, anytime / any device. But teh problem today is living between the two worlds – we aren't there yet.
– there's a range of results about the business gains possible with enterprise social media.
– social business isn't just about collaboration – it's about making people more productive. The real goal – engagement at scale. A lot of work is done in individual mode.
– see the new book about the connected company. The author studied the habits of the most effective organizations – (one finding) small teams work best.
– approach – working in the open and staying in touch. Creates a much more coordinated working practice. Leads to better network productivity.
– the basic mode of social tool use – activity streams (what's happening) and social graph (networks).
– benefits of ambient sharing and flow – (a) better decision making, (b) spreading desired behaviour, where people copy what the cool people are doing, (c) common social objects – love of football or flowers – gives people something to talk about, (d) overcoming in-the-flow problems, and (e) overcoming silos and creating connective tissue.
– why lies beyond document mountain? We can be better together – so focus on better collective use cases, not just individual use cases.
– some practical considerations – build, buy, integrate, governance.
