Sam Marshall from ClearBox Consulting is talking about loving the intranet, and how to encourage adoption.
Key points:
– How do we encourage people to adopt new tools?
– 2011 survey from Information Week, "13% of IT professionals believe their social tools have been a success."
– We don't give enough resources to the adoption side of the equation.
– Need to do more than just sorting out the hygiene factors.
– What matters – employees are productive.
– Sam showed a great "benefits map," linking tools to capabilities, to benefits, to outcomes, to strategic goals.
– Motivator – making people at happy at work – helping them make progress on meaningful tasks (see The Progress Principle)
– The challenge – "how do I help employees use the intranet to do meaningful tasks?"
– four levels of adoption – mandated, accepted, rewarding, stimulating
– .. see the Dan Pink video on motivation (Drive). Once the task requires cognitive effort, money isn't a motivator. More money = lower performance. The real drive – autonomy, mastery, and purpose.
– … leads to the downsides of gamification. Done wrong, it distorts behaviour. Badges have to be symbolic of something meaningful.
– for high adoption – focus on things that give (a) autonomy, (b) mastery, and (c) purpose.
– applying the four levels? Eg., filling out your profile.
– … if Mandated – need a phone number to get your expenses paid.
– … if Accepted – fill in as much from other sources, eg., LinkedIn.
– … if Rewarding – employee of the month, show percentage individual profile complete
– … if Stimulating – connect with like-minded people, get involved as an expert, place to express yourself.
