News Updates (August 31, 2009)

I’m back … although it will take some time to catchup. Three interesting things caught my attention as I prepared News today.

Experiment … Tom reminds us of the need to explore, to experiment, to “play” … so as to push the boundaries and see what we can do. “Whatever the activity, if it doesn’t involve some level of play, some movement outside the prescribed box, then haven’t you become the same child sitting quietly on the couch, keeping his mouth shut and his hands to himself because that’s the box your parents — or manager or company — put you in? The overall effect of these experiments and expressions, even when inappropriate or inefficient, is growth and awareness in ways that that worker who has been “shut down” will never know.More

Slow Down … Good reminder to slow down, to not be so “on”, to be more intentional about where we invest time and energy. “Busyness—or the simulated busyness of email addiction—numbs the pain of this awareness [awareness of death], but it can never totally submerge it. Given that our days are limited, our hours precious, we have to decide what we want to do, what we want to say, what and who we care about, and how we want to allocate our time to these things within the limits that do not and cannot change. In short, we need to slow down.More

Twitter Search Client … Incoming is a search client for Twitter; for Mac only. “At no point during any of this do you log into your Twitter account or post any tweets of your own. Some users will no doubt find this bothersome, and question the app’s usefulness, but if you use Twitter for research as much as I do, the arm’s length passivity of Incoming! is just what the doctor ordered. It might also appeal to people who don’t yet want to take the Twitter plunge themselves by signing up for an account, but want access to all the content that’s available via the service, in a much more manageable package than Twitter.com’s own search page.More, incomingapp.com
