Notes on "Intranets Innovation Awards 2008" (James Robertson)

Grant and Moira finished early, so I dropped into James’s sessions on the recent Intranet Innovations Awards 2008 programme.

He was talking about Transfield Services, who won a Gold award for “Team Sites in a Box”.

Key ideas: have a governance plan for SharePoint for collaboration:
– anticipate the needs, and talk about these first.
– educate the internal people
– have a careful process for establishing team spaces (a bit of workflow, and a bit of consultancy)
– enhancing the use, governance models, training
– extracting the value.

Examples of deliverables:
– a page on the Intranet called “When to use a Team Site”
– a page about a checklist for setting up a team site
– a set of videos that they crafted themselves. Decided not to use the Microsoft ones, because they addressed features that Transfield wasn’t using.

The reason they won a Gold award was not because of the use of team sites, but rather the thinking around the governance.
