Productivity

  • Look Back and Debrief … In Jason’s email newsletter, he writes about the power of 20/20 hindsight, and encourages a more deliberate strategy of reviewing past events and meetings to learn for the future. “This key management strategy of looking back to critique a completed event will save you time, effort and money on future projects; however, many times people simply don’t do a debrief session with their team because they are already busy working on the next event. The function of the meeting is to look for better ways of doing things by identifying mistakes and clarifying objectives. Two important outcomes of the debrief meeting are to (1) learn and hold onto what works and to (2) share and teach the best practices.Jason Womack
  • Train for the Unexpected … It’s okay to train for repeatable tasks and things that we generally expect to happen, but what about training for the unexpected? “So, if you can plan for the unexpected, can you train for the unexpected? Can you anticipate what you should (or will) do when the dog is friendly? Can you train people for events or actions that are unlikely but somewhat probable? How many times have you said to yourself – “I never expected to see that” or “That came out of the blue”? Probably more times than you’d care to admit. Yet every one of those instances resulted in lost productivity, and even though someone else will probably face that experience again, your learning was lost.Thinking Faster
  • Steve’s Presentation Style … Carmine dissects the presentation style of Steve Jobs: (1) build tension, (2) stick to one theme per slide, (3) add pizzazz to your delivery, (4) practice, and (5) be honest and show enthusiasm. BusinessWeek (hat tip, Andy)
