Etelos is a provider of on-demand, open-source Web 2.0 application server platform. They also provide a Web 2.0 super mall.
The first part of the equation means that they provide a platform for building Web 2.0 applications, which can then be posted to the Etelos online store. They have a bunch of CRM applications, blogging applications, and more. There’s two levels of customization to an application … the browser levels (style sheets, colors, different database integrations, etc.), and the Etelos development environment. Eg, there is a CRM for Google Apps application … pricing is personal edition (free), professional edition ($12/month/user), enterprise version (totally customizable), and a developer edition. There is offline capability available for Etelos too, which the developer must incorporate into the application to enable offline capabilities.
So … here’s the scoop … a small business is looking for a CRM application, and they visit the Etelos store to browse what’s available. They find something they want (built by a partner), even if it only delivers 90% of the functionality they need. They purchase it, customize it (themselves or via a partner), and then run it on the Etelos application servers from a partner, or can license the server to run internally.
