  • Stephen shares his thinking on knowledge workers, and some of the challenges they face in organizations. Eg, from slide 23, “knowledge workers are forced to look like this: limited in scope and location, custodian of informatiotn, knowledge as process, and use rigid ways of organizing knowledge.” He advocates a more people-oriented approach, along with better tools and better process.
  • Good list from James about how to make collaboration work well: “involve key stakeholders, training, find out what people need, single sign-on, communicate, define role of collaboration, make it easy to use, build trust via some security, user testing, when complete – get rid of collaboration spaces, establish owner, governance, demonstrate successes, ongoing remarketing, get champions, target ideas and opportunities, and value for users.
  • Encourage collaboration outside of organizational silos: “I believe that individuals and organisations should deliberately create space within our schedules to network outside of our silo say 10% of the time, and I am confident the benefits would be realised provided there was a sufficiently open mind to make the necessary lateral leaps.
  • The power of collaboration: asking someone from outside to watch and suggest betterment. Eg, hospitals and car racing pit crews.

The Technology Trends of Enterprise Collaboration and Virtual Teams

  • Vignette announced its 1Q2008 financial results. “For the first three months of 2008, the company lost $839,000 (down sharply from the $4.8 million earned in the same period a year before). The poor performance was due in part to a severe drop in license revenue, down 37 percent for the quarter (to a little under $10 million) compared to Q1 of 2007.” Matt’s advice to Vignette employees: “go work for open source companies.”

  • Jeff outlines some ideas on getting control of email through minimizing its hold: (1) think about the value you offer and whether you need email to do that; (2) conversations that need to happen should happen by phone, not over 5 emails; and (3) focus intently on the work.
